Creating a Ranking Question
First, create a new project, or open the existing project. You'll land on the project's Page & Survey tab:
Table of ContentsStart with step 1, or jump to the step you need help with:
|
Add a new question
Scroll down to the Survey questions and Dynamic Content area and click the + Add Question button:
Select the Ranking Question
In the Create a new question window, select the Ranking Question (under Quantitative questions):
Enter the prompt or question
The question prompt window will open.
Type in the prompt and click Continue:Edit Question
In the question editor, you'll be able to edit the question wording (if needed,) add optional explainer text, an image (1), and Response Options.
Explainer Text (optional)
If you're opting to edit the explainer text, click the Add Explainer Text button under the question prompt. The explainer text box will appear:
⭐️ Tip: It's a good idea to include explainer text to help explain how participants can participate, especially if they are limited to ranking a specific number of options. For example:
"Please rank your top 3 choices in order from most important to least important."
Add Image (optional)
If you're opting to add an image to the question, click the Add Image button and upload a new image, or make your image selection from the image library.
The image will appear above the Question wording.
Note: Ranking questions are limited to 1 image, and images cannot be added to the response options. All images uploaded to the PublicInput platform must be 10 MB or smaller.
Create Response Options
Scroll down to the Response Options for this question.
Type in the first response, and click + New Option, or hit enter on your keyboard to move to the next response option.
Continue until all response options are entered.
Save Response Options
When all responses have been added, click the Save New Options button:
Edit Response Order (optional)
Once the response options are saved, you can opt to rearrange them by using the hamburger (three lines) menu to the right of each option to drag and drop them in the order that you prefer.
You can also use the drop down gear menu to the right of each response to edit or delete the response option.
Add "Other" Option (optional)
The Add "Other" button adds a response option that acts as a comment field, allowing the participant to select "other" and then write-in their unique response.
Question toggle settings
Require ranking all options
If you would like to require participants to rank all options, be sure to toggle on the "Users must rank all the response options" button
Vote counts
The Show vote counts and results to voters toggle is toggled on by default, and will display the response results live, in real time – up to that point in time – after the participant submits their ranked choices.
If you do not wish to share the vote counts with participants until the end of the survey, be sure to toggle this option off.
Advanced Options (optional)
will allow you to create a ranked options limit, meaning the participant can only rank the number of options specified.
To do this, click the Advanced Options button and scroll down to the Limit Number of Choices field.
Here, you'll type in the # and click the Save Advanced Options button at the bottom of the window:
Note: The default limit is set to "0", which means there is no response option limit. If the participant is allowed to select all options, leave this number set to "0" or do not adjust this setting.
FAQ: Ranking Questions
Can I add an image to each of my ranking question responses like I can for Single or Multiple Option questions? | No, this is not a function of a Ranking Question, as it would make the list of responses very long; however, you can add an image at the top of the question prompt with depictions of the options to choose from! |
Can I add an "other" response option to a ranking question? | Yes you can! The "other" response option allows the participant to type in their own response, which is then recorded as a comment as well as an "other" response upon submission. |
