Using the new email builder (beta)

Update your draft campaigns with the newest campaign builder.

Written by Gregory

The new email builder is a redesigned drag-and-drop editor for your email campaigns, available to every account. This article covers how to switch over, add and arrange blocks, and style them. Along the way you'll preview your email and run an accessibility check before you send.

If your organization has the AI assistant turned on, you can access it from this builder [insert link to the AI Assistant here]

Note:

Once a campaign has been converted and saved in the new builder, it cannot be reverted to the "Classic builder".

Templates, and A/B test campaigns, still open in the classic builder for now.

What you can do with it

  • Build an email from sections, each holding one or more blocks, and rearrange them by dragging.

  • Choose a column layout for a section: one column, 50/50, thirds, 66/33, 33/66, or 25/75.

  • Add text, images, buttons, dividers, polls, events, social sharing, and your standard header and footer.

  • Change colors, backgrounds, and spacing for a single block, a whole section, or the entire email.

  • Preview the email and run an accessibility check before you send.

Where to find it

Open an email campaign from the email campaigns list. On the campaign page, choose New builder, which is labelled Beta. The campaign reopens in the new editor. To go back to the classic editor, choose Classic builder at the top of the page.

Step by step

  1. Open your campaign and switch to the new builder as described above.

  2. Pick a block from the palette on the left, or search for it with Find a block. Drag it onto the email, or choose + Insert to add it at your current selection. Using + Insert is the keyboard-friendly way to add a block.

  3. Click a block or a section on the email to open its settings. The palette is replaced by a side panel with Block, Section, and Global tabs. Choose Done when you are finished to bring the palette back.

  4. Choose Preview to see the email as recipients will. Your changes are saved first.

  5. Choose A11y Check to scan the campaign for accessibility problems.

  6. Choose Save All Changes to save your work. The top of the editor shows "Unsaved changes" or the time of the last save.

  7. When the email is ready, send it the same way you always do, starting with a test send to yourself.

The block palette

The palette has two groups. Layout holds Columns and Section, which control how the email is structured. Content holds the blocks that carry your message:

  • Text & Images, Image + Caption, and Image

  • Button and Divider

  • Question and Event, which bring a poll question or an event into the email

  • Social Sharing and Translation

  • Default Header and Default Footer, which use your organization's standard header and footer

To add a block, drag and drop it directly into your email content

Styling: block, section, or the whole email

Once you have blocks added to your email, when you select a block, you'll then see a new styling side panel.

The side panel has three tabs, and each changes a different facet of the email.

  • Block changes the content of the block you clicked on.

  • Section changes the whole band that block sits in, including its background and spacing.

  • Global changes the whole email, such as its overall colors.

Things to keep in mind

The new builder does not change how you send. Recipients, scheduling, and sending work the same as before.

  • Custom CSS is not available in the editor. Styling now lives in the Block, Section, and Global panels.

  • Templates and A/B test campaigns still open in the classic builder.

  • Once your campaign has been saved in the new builder, it cannot be reverted to the classic builder.

  • AI features enabled for your account to access the AI Assistant builder.

Tips and limits

  • Run A11y Check before every send. The Default Footer carries the unsubscribe link that bulk email requires, so keep it in.

  • For accessibility, add alt text to every image.

  • If something looks off, the ... menu has Reload blocks from server, which reloads the email from its last saved version.

  • The help menu at the right of the toolbar lists the keyboard shortcuts.
