Segmenting your participants allows you to group participants in your surveys by various factors, e.g. demographics, location, subscribers, comment tags, etc. Using segmentation, you can build or edit reports in order to reach out to participants and further engage with them.
In the three step-by-step examples below, the principles are the same: Select a segment factor, select variables (e.g. either a question and response combination or a map area, etc.) to define the audience, and then create a name for the segment. Finally, view the location of the users associated with the new segment and analyze the results for your campaigns.
Example 1: How to create a Question Response segment
A question repsonse segment is used to very precisely define an audience you wish to target specifically and learn more about, e.g. only vegans or only people who go abroad on holiday at Easter.
Step 1: To create a new segment, click CRM in the left navigation panel to go to the CRM page and then click on the green Create New Segment button.
Step 2: To create a segment based on questions and responses to those questions, click Question Response.
Step 3: Select the question you would like to use from the drop-down list.
Tip: You can use the search function to find the project you are looking for, e.g. “Holiday.”
Step 4: After you have selected a question, the possible responses will be listed. Select the response option you want to focus on (the one which users you are interested in will select) and then click Continue. In the example below, we are targeting those lucky respondents who will be celebrating the holidays this year.
Step 5: Type a name for the new segment and then click Create Segment.
Step 6: Next, you can open and view details about the new segment’s participants. Click Open to continue.
Step 7: A map showing the location of participants associated with the new segment will be displayed. As you can see below, the segment participants are clustered in a small area. To de-cluster the participants, click Toggle Clustering.
Step 8: Now you can zoom in on the map to give you a better view of where the participants in your newly-created segment are located.
Let us take a look at two other ways to segment survey participants.
Example 2: How to create a Meeting or Event segment
Interested in finding out who attended, and therefore was presumably interested in, a particular event? Let us see how to identify these participants.
Step 1: In the left navigation pane, click CRM to go back to the main CRM page and then click on the green Create New Segment button.
Step 2: For this example, to create a segment based on a meeting or event, click Meeting or Event.
- From the drop-down list, select a meeting or event (1).
- Select which participants you wish to include in your new segment (2). In this example, we are interested in all participants who actually attended a particular meeting.
- Click Continue (3).
Step 3: Type a name for the new segment and then click Create Segment.
Step 4: Next, you can open and view details about the location of users belonging to the new segment, i.e. those who attended a particular meeting. Click Open to continue.
Example 3: How to create a location-based segment
If you are interested in targeting people in a specific area or areas, location-based segmentation is a good way to do it.
Step 1: First go back to the main CRM page and then click Create New Segment.
Step 2: Select Location from the segment selection popup.
Step 3: Upload a shape (a boundary) from a KML file or create your own shape to demarcate the area from within which participants should be located.
First, select the shape button.
Then, left-click on your mouse to create the first point in your shape. Draw a line and then left-click again to create a new starting point for the next line in the shape. Continue until the shape is complete, using the last line to join the end point in the shape with the starting point. At the final point, double-click with the left mouse button to save the new shape.
Step 4: Click Continue.
Step 5: Type a name for the new grouping of participants and click Create Segment.
And you are done, all shipshape!
